Jukebox Saturday Night for July 7th, 2018: The Foolish Things, Gigolos, and Real Thing Edition

We'll start out with something old and wonderful …

"These Foolish Things" by Thelma Carpenter performing with Budd Friedman and His Orchestra (1945)

Bryan Wright played it in his most recent Shellac Stack program. As Bryan said, she really performs his song masterfully.

Next up, another oldie that has been done many times in many different ways by many artists …

"Just a Gigolo" as performed by Bing Crosby (1931)

The "Casucci" here refers to Leonello Casucci, the Italian composer who in 1928 wrote the music to music Schöner Gigolo with lyrics by Julius Brammer. Irving Caesar adapted the song into English in 1929.

I suppose the most famous "recent" version of this song is David Lee Roth's sprawling comedic video version, which I'll post here …

This is Roth's 1985 version entitled "Just a Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody" from his debut solo album Crazy from the Heat.

And we'll end with something suitably Saturday night energetic and upbeat …

"This Time I Know It's For Real" by Donna Summer from her Another Place and Time album (1989)

I featured this song in this Jukebox Saturday Night edition 3-1/4 years ago so I think it's OK to re-feature it.

OK, that's all for now. My next planned entry is for this coming Monday night.
