A Little Bit More All Around

** Updated 7:20PM 6/12/2014: See below.**

Continuing with my Kamchatka Peninsula theme -- here is a snow-capped volcano in the Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve.

I also didn't mention the largest city on the Kamchatka -- the tongue-twister name of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The 11,300+ foot high snow-capped Koryaksky Volcano towers above Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, October 2005.

Of note, and according to Wikipedia, the city's population has dropped from 268,747 in 1989 to 179,526 in 2010.

This entry is mostly just a short follow-up to yesterday's entry.

I went to the gym again tonight and I was able to work a bit with Tony unscheduled. I also spent 48 minutes on the treadmill and went into the swimming pool.

But primarily, I just wanted to note how obscene globally warmed warm it is tonight here in D.C., and how it refuses to rain. At the midnight hour, it's still about 60F around Dupont Circle and 58F KDCA, which refers to the useless weather station at Reagan Washington National Airport.

The Palka-cabra creature speaks!

"Morris, how long can this beautiful, sunny, record warm weather last? I'll have the answer when we come back."

A wussy cold front is trying to pass through the area tonight but the precipitation along it is drying up faster than WOODY! can remove the POPS from his Sterling LWX weather nether zones.

60F is only 10F above the normal daily high and is just abnormally warm to have at the 10PM hour on December 4th in Washington, D.C.

This was a fact that Piers Morgan himself forcefully pointed out (or at least that's what the close-captioning appeared to show as I watched it at the gym tonight) to some mouth-foaming climate change denying GOP Teabagger who was pitted opposite Bill Nye, who for his part performed admirably, "globally cool," if I can make a bad pun.

Nye's reasoned arguments, of course, won't make any difference to the rightwingnuts who live inside their own hermetically sealed bubble. Paul Krugman is right: No one on the right EVER admits a mistake or that an actual alternative worldview exists. That's just how it is. He was referring to pundits and politicians that are part of the corporate oligarchical overclass that runs the country, but it also applies to fundie Teabaggers or a libertarian whack-a-doodle types.

Morgan -- who otherwise is often part of the right-tilted mainstream media problem -- even pointed out how warm it was in D.C. at the very time of his CNN show tonight.

Of course, I realize that the American mainstream corporate - whore media thrive on fake balance and contrived controversy where there is only GOP lunacy and corporate oligarchical intrigue. True, MSNBC doesn't do that, but the mainstream media and Beltway Consensus -- embodied in The WaHoPo Editorial Board -- live and breath it.

So there you have it, everybody, encapsulated in the above photograph, the absurd and vulgar world of 2012:

I also wanted to note that Republican loony paranoia caused the Senate on Monday to kill the chance of the U.S. ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. The Senate vote was 61 to 38 or six short of the needed 67.

The reasoning involved something about UN Blackhawk helicopters, forced abortions, home schooling in Utah, confiscation of American citizens' firearms, fluoride in the water, and whatever the hell the GOP whackjobs come up with in their fevered Fox News imaginations.

Sen. John Kerry spoke eloquently about the failure, but in the end it changes nothing.

This was also a nasty slap at former Sen. Bob Dole, who literally got up off his death bed to make it to the Senate to try to persuade his one-time colleagues, but it didn't work.

Anyway, it climbed to 72F officially at KDCA -- but well short of the 76F daily record high from 1998. But the minimum for Dec. 4th of 49F (set the early hours of the morning) will have been just 1F below the normal daily high of 50F.

Oh, yes, I also wanted to link to this Paul Krugman blog entry (with embedded article link) about the pure and unadultered nonsense of the Boehner "plan" to avoid the contrived "fiscal cliff" at the end of this month. Even that fake plan caused the Rightwing Deathstar to freak out.

OK, that's all for now. My next update likely will not be until Friday, but that one will be early since the holiday party is that night. Tomorrow, as I mentioned in my previous entry, I'm supposed to go to No. 9 for a post-work happy hour.

Goodnight. I'm up, as ever, way too late.

By the way, I'm watching a rerun of Happily Divorced at this late hour on TVLand as I post this entry. It features Joan Collins as a guest star, and it's a hysterically funny episode. She looks great for 79 -- some 45 years since that long ago but eternal Star Trek: The Original Series episode The City on the Edge of Forever.
