Shore to Please -OR- Wildwood, New Jersey Visit Pictures (Part 1)

Wendy stands on the wooden walkway to the vast expanse of beach in Wildwood Crest, N.J., 11:46AM, Aug. 26, 2012. This is the beach entranceway off Palm Road next to Crest Park.

This is my planned / delayed blog entry of Jersey shore trip images. I have lots of pictures to post.

#######

The trip started with a drive to Lewes, Delaware on Aug. 24th to catch the Cape May - Lewes ferry to New Jersey. We* drove over the Bay Bridge and across the vapid Delmarva and we made a brief stop in Rehoboth Beach, which is located about 5 miles from Lewes. (Of note, "Lewes" is today pronounced "Lewis" but in my Jersey childhood, we always said, "Loos.")

*"We" in this entry refer to Wendy, Gary, and myself.

The water tower in Rehoboth Beach, Del., as seen from Baltimore Avenue, 5:24PM, Aug. 24, 2012.

As an aside, Rebobo will be overloaded with D.C. homosexuals in a drunken, vacuous, vapid, and sorority girl-like vicious frenzy this Labor Day weekend. By December, Rohomo will be its winter ghost town self. Given everyone will be away from Washington, including likely the D.C. Gay Mafia, perhaps this weekend would be a good time for me to visit 17th Street. I think so.

#######

Aqua Grill outdoor deck, Rehoboth Beach, Del., 5:47PM, Aug. 24, 2012. The homosexuals were beginning to come out en masse. Actually, I recognized about a dozen people from D.C. including those three in the picture (center left).

#######

Happy hour at Blue Moon bar, Rehoboth Beach, Del., 6:43PM, Aug. 24, 2012.

#######

Yours truly at dusk looking at the top of the Twin Capes ferry in Delaware Bay, 7:43PM, Aug. 24, 2012.

#######

Lovely sunset as seen from the Cape May - Lewes ferry -- we were once again (3rd time running) on the MV Twin Capes vessel, one of five ferries in the fleet. Yes, it is a car ferry.

We had just pulled out of the ferry terminal on the Lewes side and were heading to Cape May. This was 7:47PM, Aug. 24, 2012.

#######

Wendy and Gary seated at the back bar of the Twin Capes ferry, Delaware Bay, 8:00PM, Aug. 24, 2012. There was a live band that played for about 45 minutes during the approx. 90 minute ferry crossing. Of note, that fellow to the left of Gary actually asked Wendy -- after asking my permission to speak to her (!) -- for some relationship advice.

Of note, I think Wendy was the only passenger on that ferry at this time who could relate a personal experience -- from last year -- of taking the ferry between Zanzibar and Tanzania. Not exactly Lewes to Cape May.

#######

First day at the Jersey Shore in "The Wildwoods" ...

This is the pink elephant (actually, it's more fuchsia-hued) designed ventilation atop Rocky's Liquor Mart in Wildwood, N.J., 2:57PM, Aug. 25, 2012.

Of note, neighboring Wildwood Crest is a totally "dry" city wherein no businesses sell liquor. I'm not sure about North Wildwood.

Yes, I realize the first picture I'm posting of my Jersey summer shore trip is of a tawdry looking liquor store instead of the beach and the ocean. That's just how it worked out. I took some pictures at the beach earlier that day but it was cloudy and they didn't come out so well.

#######

Gary and Wendy in the produce section of the Superfresh in North Wildwood, N.J., 3:17PM, Aug. 25, 2012. We went there to buy some supplies for the mini-fridge in the Jolly Roger Motel in Wildwood Crest where we stayed.

#######

The intersection of Arctic and Rio Grande Avenues in Wildwood, N.J., 10:39AM, Aug. 26, 2012.

YES, Arctic Avenue exists in Wildwood, N.J., though it is a residential side street. We drove around the previous night in that seemingly endless thunderstorm (see previous entry) looking for it. There is an Atlantic Avenue and a Pacific Avenue that runs through both Wildwood Crest and Wildwood while Arctic Avenue is just in Wildwood. Atlantic Avenue continues northward into North Wildwood.

There is no Indian Avenue that I could find. And certainly no Southern Avenue. Very few people even get what I mean by that last part.

#######

Exterior of the Pink Champagne Motel in Wildwood, N.J., 10:48AM, Aug. 26, 2012. This is one of many almost Platonic form-like kitschy motels in the Wildwoods that often date back to the 1950s.

#######

The New Jersey flag and a series of other flags / banners that I think are the maritime signal / semaphore ones. It looks sort of Old Spice-ish. This hotel is located across the street from the Jolly Roger where we stayed. This was at 11:44AM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

Dune grasses at the edge the beach of Wildwood Crest, N.J., 11:46AM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

First actual beach picture ... or in the words of the New Jersey license plate series, Shore to Please ...

Surf and beach in Wildwood Crest, N.J., 11:56AM, Aug. 26, 2012

Of note, the Wildwoods are the only location in New Jersey -- well, except maybe for Atlantic City, but that just doesn't count -- where one does not have to pay a fee to go on the beach in the summer months. The fee is imposed by whatever borough ("boro"), township, city, or other municipal entity, or for that matter, state park.

Much like no self-service gasoline and "delayed green" lights or jug-handles, it is a quirk of New Jersey that you just deal with.

(Reposted from previous entry:) Yours truly at the Jersey shore, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 12:01PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

(Reposted from previous entry:) The beach at Wildwood Crest, New Jersey as seen in a curiously "veiled" photograph (created by the water condensate on the lenses) that I took with my cheap cellphone camera, 1:26PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

The lightly roiled surf, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 2:23PM, Aug. 26, 2012. This is a somewhat cropped image of the large cellphone picture I (carefully) took (standing in the surf). The ocean was more turbulent the previous day with a strong onshore wind.

#######

High Low Jersey Shore ...

...the boardwalk in Wildwood, N.J., 4:39PM, Aug. 26, 2012. The boardwalk runs between the three Morey's Piers that include south-to-north Adventure Pier, Mariner's Landing Pier, and Surfside Pier.

Snooki / Jersey Shore Detour ...

I think we were actually at the Jersey shore on this day, August 26, 2012, when Snooki -- who inhabits Seaside Heights, located approximately 80 miles north of Wildwood -- had her baby, Lorenzo Dominic LaValle.

Here is a picture that was posted on TMZ of mommy and newborn baby leaving Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., on Aug. 28, 2012.

Welcome to the world, Lorenzo. Planet Earth, that is. God bless them both.

I would also like to note that I grew up in New Jersey -- indeed, pretty much at the Jersey shore in Long Branch and Sea Bright back in the 1970s and 1980s. "The Jersey shore" is how everyone in the Garden State refers to it. But until that unlikely MTV show, I never knew there was a whole "Jersey shore" culture. "Jersey shore" was a place, not a cultural phenomenon.

On a side note, I love that name "Saint Barnabas." (The original location of the Greenline terminus in "lower" Prince George's County was supposed to be St. Barnabas Road, not Branch Avenue.)

#######

Anyway, back to my Jersey shore visit pictures and our regularly scheduled blog entry ...

Gary and Wendy at Mariner's Landing Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 4:41PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

More vintage kitschy Jersey shore -- here a giant octopus battling the crew of an overturned pirate ship -- on the boardwalk, Wildwood, N.J., 4:44PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

(Reposted from previous entry:) Jersey shore carnival-like boardwalk amusement park clutter on Mariner's Landing Pier, Wildwood, New Jersey, 4:48PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

It's easy to get confused which rides are on which of the three piers.

#######

The "Giant Wheel" Ferris wheel on Mariner's Landing Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 5:03PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

The sprawling water park on Mariner's Landing Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 5:05PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

I can't quite figure out the name of this attraction in my copy of "Morey's Piers & Beachfront Waterparks: The Official Guide to Amusement Piers & Beachfront Waterparks," so I'm not even going to try.

#######

The Kanga-Bounce ride, Surfside Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 5:36PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

#######

The Great Nor'easter Coaster, Surfside Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 5:38PM, Aug. 26, 2012. The three of us rode the coaster and it was an intense experience. (I previously rode it on my last trip to Wildwood in Aug. 2010.) The ride was so violent in its motions that afterward, I thought I was going to have a brain aneurysm.

#######

Table and umbrella, Oasis Cafe, Surfside Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 6:19PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

The Oasis Cafe is at the far end of the Surfside Pier -- except the end of the pier is not actually in the ocean. This is true of all three piers. There was last call within 4 minutes of us arriving and the rum drinks we got each cost $10.

#######

A very large lady on the Surfside Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 6:36PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

I was concerned that were she of a sudden to fall into the ocean, she would have generated an approximately 10-meter high tsunami. That's a lot of water.

#######

Dante's Dungeon, Surfside Pier, Wildwood, N.J., 6:37PM, Aug. 26, 2012

I posted a picture of this same ride -- the same red-light eyed mechanical Satan on my 2009 trip to Wildwood. You can find it in this entry from Aug. 2009.

There was also a sign warning guests not to touch the live actors on pain of being ejected from the park with no refund. In these ways -- the mechanical Satan AND the warning -- the ride reminds me of these two creatures of the D.C. underworld and the bar with bank vault they endlessly inhabit.

#######

Yours truly seated at the bar at Kelly's Cafe Restaurant, Wildwood, N.J., 9:33PM, Aug. 26, 2012.

Notice the bar theme??

The three of us went to Kelly's Cafe Restaurant on Sunday night (Aug. 26th) and there was a "Quizzo" trivia game being hosted by a Wildwood local whose name I cannot now recall. He was sort of a non-descript, pudgy, little guy but he had a witty sense of humor. The grand prize was a t-shirt and baseball cap and/or coupon to eat at the restaurant.

#######

Here is a somewhat blurry picture of the bar at Kelly's Cafe Restaurant, Wildwood, N.J., 9:43PM, Aug. 26, 2012. You can see the Quizzo host in the green shirt at the end of the bar. The bartender -- whom we tipped well -- was not friendly at all.

#######

Last day in the Wildwoods ...

Another picture of the grassy dunes -- well, they aren't exactly "dunes" but a sandy area at the head of the beach that is off-limits and covered in grasses -- in Wildwood Crest, N.J. by the Palm Road access point, 12:08PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

It proceeded to cloud up and even rain a bit (even after the main clouds had departed) for the next hour but thereafter it became dazzlingly sunny. I think a frontal boundary cleared the coast.

#######

One of two more pictures of me through which to suffer ...

Yours truly at the beach with the cloud-mottled sky at a backdrop at the beach, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 2:56PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

#######

The beach shepherd (and last picture of me in this entry) ...

Yours truly at the beach with a towel over my head on a cirrus cloud-fleeced summer blue sky, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 3:41PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

Although I'm Eye-talian and Polish, the Polish side dominates when it comes to my skin complexion and I have to take lots of precautions at the beach such as wearing high SPF suntan lotion and avoiding too much sunlight when on the beach.

#######

The Jersey shore at Wildwood Crest, N.J., 3:03PM, Aug. 27, 2012

#######

A couple seated serenely at the edge of the expansive beach in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, 3:00PM, Aug. 27, 2012. This couple was actually watching their son in the surf.

#######

Here is another image of the same lady as in the previous picture, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 3:59PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

She and her husband and son were getting ready to leave the beach, as was I. That helicopter -- which said "STATE TROOPER" on it in big lettering -- thump-thump-thump-thump whooshed by, proceeded to do a full 360-degree turn not even 1,000 yards offshore, and then continued on down the coastline toward Cape May, disappearing into the shimmering afternoon sky.

And with that, it was time to "Begin the Beguine" and get ready to head back. We had dinner in Wildwood and then drove back to D.C. between about 9PM and 1230AM. Wendy had a work obligation on Tuesday afternoon (she works with refugees at a legal clinic).

Here we were on our second and final visit to the Dogtooth Bar and Grill, Wildwood, N.J., 8:04PM, Aug. 27, 2012. We had our final Jersey shore vacation dinner there -- Monday night prime rib.

That guy in the picture was quite attractive, although straight in that metrosexual way nowadays, although I may be misunderstanding what the term "metrosexual" actually is supposed to mean.

#######

As it turned out, leaving at night was a good idea -- we made it back in very good time even with a necessary "detour" all the way up to the Delaware Memorial Bridge and then down I-95. We drove by at least three construction sites as well as the usual mess that is the Delaware Memorial Bridge area and yet there was no delay anywhere. (Delaware's portion of I-95 is basically a giant speed trap and delay-prone area. I guess given the lack of sales taxes, the state has to raise revenue somehow someway.)

I used to do (as a passenger) that drive up and down I-95 between Baltimore and New Jersey as far back as the early 1980s fairly regularly, and as I recall it, the highway was simply not as prone to delays as it is now.

Rushing through the Matthew Henry, I mean, Fort McHenry Tunnel, Baltimore, Md., 11:38PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

And, yes, OF COURSE it reminds me of the climactic tunnel chase scene in THX 1138. Good movie.

#######

Last Jersey shore picture of this entry ...

Lightly roiled summer surf, Wildwood Crest, N.J., 4:10PM, Aug. 27, 2012.

Until next summer, I guess.

This concludes my Jersey shore pictures, in particular, the images taken with my cellphone camera. I am hoping to post in a subsequent entry an additional batch of pictures that Wendy took with her much better quality camera on her smartphone. That would not be until next week.
