"I'll Walk Alone" -- Charlie Parker at Storyville (1953)
Charlie Parker died much too soon (at age 34) in 1955 and in a terrible way from the terrible addictions from which he suffered. As for Storyville, it was a legendary jazz night club in Boston in the 1950s where many famous artists performed. There is a Storyville now in Boston but it is not related to the original.
"Skylark" performed by Bobby Darin (year uncertain)
Alas, Bobby Darin also died much too soon (at age 37) in 1973 after a lifetime of poor health. He is probably best known for the songs "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea."
Many artists have performed the song over the decades Skylark was written by Johnny Mercer with music by Hoagy Carmichael and published in 1941.
And now let's end on a happier note.
"When Smokey Sings" by ABC (1987)
This is the original video.
I quite like the lyrics as well as the happy up tempo throughout the song. My favorite line is toward the end: "As she's packin' her things / As she's spreadin' her wings, / Smashin' my hell with the heaven brings!"
