The Nuclear Family -OR - Natural and Manmade Disasters

China Japan Syndrome ...

Nuclear Meltdown ...?!?

OK, the Japanese 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami was enough of a catastrophe ...

... but the worsening nuclear disaster at the Fukushima I (or Fukushima Daiichi) Nuclear Power Station -- up to and now possibly including an outright meltdown of the cores of at least two of the six reactors that make up the combined 4,700 Megawatt facility -- will be nothing less than a Biblical catastrophe.

If this in fact is what is occurring -- and the Japanese authorities' story has been shifting for the past two days and getting steady worse with each hour -- then we have a Chernobyl-like global disaster on our hands that is very bad ...

UPDATED 2:30PM EDT 3/13/2011

Nuclear Crisis Worsens with Possible Partial Reactor Meltdowns at Multiple Units in Earthquake and Tsunami - Ravaged Japan

The nuclear crisis in Japan continues to escalate as multiple plants are now having increasingly dire cooling problems including both at the badly damaged 6-unit Fukushima I (Fukushima Daiichi) plant (in particular Units 1 and 3) and now at the 4-unit Fukushima II (or Fukushima Daini) plant located closer to Tokyo with out-of-control heating of multiple reactor units at these facilities.

Updated New York Times online story here.

Partial meltdowns are potentially underway at these reactors even as Japan copes with the worst disaster to strike since World War II with the death toll from the Friday earthquake and tsunami now
surging past 10,000.

#######

It is bad way beyond the severe earthquake and devastating tsunami that struck parts of Japan on Friday.

A 4:39 video of the earthquake-generated tsunami as it struck and engulfed the port city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, March 11, 2011.

#######

More startling footage posted on You Tube of the tsunami striking Kamaishi and even more dramatically (as seen from a helicopter) of it engulfing the area in nearby Miyagi Prefecture.

#######

A still-frame image of the tsunami as it inundated coastal plain farmland in northeastern coastal Honshu Island (Miyagi Prefecture?) following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake, March 11, 2011.

#######

An elderly lady watches in shock as the earthquake-generated tsunami engulfs Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, March 11, 2011.

God bless her and may she -- as most Japanese ladies these days do -- live to, like, 124 years old.

#######

This is a truly bad pun of a headline that I saw on Friday evening (3:41PM PST) on The Los Angeles Times online site.

#######

Japan can handle this earthquake and tsunami, bad as they were ... It cannot handle a full-scale nuclear reactor core meltdown. No one can.

Lastly -- and I say this as a proponent of civilian nuclear power to generate base load electricity in place of frickin' coal -- maybe ... just maybe ... it's not a good idea to build multiple reactor units near very earthquake prone fault lines along seashores prone to tsunamis.

I also highly recommend this page showing satellite photos taken by GeoEye of selected spots in Japan before and after the earthquake and tsunami. **MOVE THE BLUE SLIDER IN THE MIDDLE OF EACH IMAGE TO COMPARE BEFORE/AFTER SATELLITE IMAGES.**

Weather Update: Most Recent Rainfall Totals

So we had another deluge of rain on Thursday into early Friday that dropped 1.5 to 3 inches of welcome rainfall across the region.

The unusually colorful LWX county warning area map as of 6:32PM EST, March 10, 2011.

#######

The LWX enhanced composite mode radar -- which always looks more threatening than it is since it shows activity inside the cloud as well as what is falling from to the ground -- at 6:40PM, March 10, 2011.

#######

The following amounts fell in the event at the three regional airport climate recording stations:

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA): 1.47"; Thurgood Marshall Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI): 2.63"; and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD): 1.55".

This rainfall put us into surplus (at least temporarily) for the year and it follows many months of below normal precipitation. The following are the month and year to date precip totals through Saturday, March 12, 2011.

Rather than my usual frog rain gauge images, I'm going to post a picture of a shirtless Taylor Lautner standing in a fake photo-shoot rainstorm to accompany the posting of the airport precip totals.

DCA
MTD: 2.88" +1.40" (1.48")
YTD: 7.25" +0.01" (7.24")

BWI
MTD: 3.69" +2.15" (1.54")
YTD: 9.04" +1.01" (8.03")

IAD
MTD: 3.88" +2.53" (1.35")
YTD: 7.96" +0.79" (7.17")

OK, I think that's all for now.

DST = BS

BTW, this morning it was time to "spring ahead" in the annual fritual of moving the clocks ahead a full hour to spend what is now EIGHT (as opposed to the previous SEVEN) months on goddamn Daylight Saving Time. Daylight saving time ("DST") is one of the longer, deeper-running, and unchallenged hoaxes perpetrated on the public.

Long story short -- and as told by Michael Downing in his 2005 book Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time -- the whole notion of "DST" having any real usefulness is a LIE that fails to hold up on ANY of its shifting rationales.

In the end, it has always been about controlling peoples' behavior for whatever purpose was seen as socially useful, primarily shopping / economic in nature.

The bullshit about "saving energy" only came after the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973. In fact, by adding an hour of light in the summer months, people go out more to do stuff -- meaning they DRIVE more and use the inherently highly inefficient gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine of the automobile. That is, it INCREASES energy usage. And its agricultural reason -- giving more light to farmers in the morning in summer -- is EXACTLY BACKWARDS (it takes away an hour of light).

Did I mention I'm fat?

#######

OK, that's all for now. Of note, the piece of pizza I ate upon arriving home is not sitting well at all and I think I'm going to be ill. Just sayin' ... I took three Prilosec pills.

The 1200 block of U Street, NW, Washington, D.C., 2:49AM EDT (or 1:49AM EST -- not sure if we had jumped to frickin' "DST" yet or not), March 13, 2011. The building with the mural of Duke Ellington is called the True Reformer Building.

My next planned update won't be until the Tuesday - Wednesday period.
